Adjusting file server performance
If usage is heavy on the file server, you can adjust settings to improve performance.
IMPORTANT: If the software adjustments in this section are not adequate, you may want to consider adding more random-access memory (RAM), purchasing more powerful equipment, or changing to a faster network type.
Allocating processing power
To adjust the processing power given to other AppleShare IP servers or other programs:
1 |
Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer. |
2 |
Press the File Services button and choose Show File Server Activity. |
|
|
3 |
Drag the Set Maximum control to the desired setting. |
|
Dragging to the right increases the performance of FTP, Web, AppleShare, and Windows file sharing. It may reduce the performance of other programs installed on the computer. |
Reducing concurrent connections
You can improve file server performance by allowing fewer users or guests to log on at the same time. You can also set the number of concurrent Web connections.
To change the number of concurrent file sharing and FTP connections:
1 |
Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer. |
2 |
Press the File Services button and choose Configure File Server. |
|
|
3 |
Click the Access tab. |
4 |
In the Connections boxes, type the number of concurrent connections to allow. |
|
Check your license agreement for the maximum number allowed. |
5 |
Click Save. |
6 |
Stop and start the server. |
Allocating server memory
To limit the amount of memory allocated to the file server (and ensure there's enough memory to run other programs):
1 |
Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer. |
2 |
Press the File Services button and choose Configure File Server. |
|
|
3 |
Click the General tab. |
4 |
Click the arrows next to the box labeled "Maximum server memory." |
5 |
Click Save. |
Resetting the cache
Resetting the cache empties it temporarily so your computer has more memory to perform other tasks. On a busy server, the cache may fill again quickly.
To reset the file server cache temporarily:
1 |
Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer. |
2 |
Press the File Services button and choose Configure File Server. |
|
|
3 |
Click the General tab. |
4 |
Click the Reset Cache button. |
|
Resetting the cache may take several minutes. Performance temporarily decreases after the cache is reset. |
